Here are 5 ways you can work on content creation from home.

Coronavirus is a pandemic that has now forced some countries to shut down completely.  The Cayman Islands has already taken measures to shut down schools and enforce travels bans, which will affect many families and business travelers who rely heavily on face-to-face marketing to build new client leads. But, social distancing doesn’t have to mean that your marketing and content creation efforts have to be neglected.  There are many ways to increase brand awareness while you sip your coffee, swinging in the backyard hammock, with no pants on.

All you need is a laptop and a decent internet connection.  You could even just use your phone to be honest.  That’s all you need to drive your brand forward.  So, instead of feeling like you’re stuck, think of this moment as an incubation period for new ideas and potentially a new way of promoting your brand.

The main keys when creating are diversity, consistency and volume.  You want make sure you are targeting as many platforms as possible that are relevant to your business and executing a daily/weekly regiment of useful content.  Remember, the more content you create, the higher your brand ranks online.

So, here are 5 ways to keep marketing efforts going:

1 – Write a Blog

77% of internet users read blogs. And that number isn’t decreasing.  Surprisingly, in an age where video is king, the written word still kills it on the internet.  Also, if you host a blog on your website, it’s shown to have 434% more indexed pages, greatly increasing your search engine ranking.

2 – Video Content

Whether your B2B or B2C, there’s no greater way to market your brand than with video, in fact 81% of businesses use video as a marketing tool, and mobile video consumption rises by 100% every year! You can start with something as simple as a daily VLOG.  All you need is a phone or laptop camera and something to say.

PRO TIP – If you’ve got a hectic business, don’t get caught up in concerning yourself over physically creating content every week.   Make it in bulk and release it over time.  That also gives you time to digest audience feedback and tweak your next batch of videos. 

The best part about this is that video is at the top of the food-chain. 

There are a ton of way to repurpose this content:
  • Make an audio only version for a podcast (see my 3rd tip)
  • Cut the show down to bite-sized videos and redistribute on social media like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter.
  • Get a transcription of the video, edit it, and turn that into a blog (Look at that! You just made a bunch of content from one video).  You can also use the transcription to subtitle the video, which is super important when you find that 85% of Facebook videos are watched without sound.  That statistic is 4 years old now, so the assumption is that number may have increased.  Makes sense when you’re scrolling down the Facebook rabbit-hole at night and don’t want to wake your significant other.

3 – Podcasts

This is primarily for my B2B colleagues.  If you’re not comfortable being on camera, that’s ok!  Start a podcast.   If your biz-dev is primarily US-based, I have good news, 70% of Americans are familiar with podcasts and 22% of American’s listen to podcasts weekly!  Here’s a pretty Infographic talking about the stats for 2020.

4 – IinkedIn Slides

I can’t stress enough how important LinkedIn is to B2B marketing efforts, in fact – 94% of B2B marketers focus on LinkedIn to distribute their content.  It may be the most undervalued product in your arsenal, and the reach is insane.   There are many ways to be heard on LinkedIn that I’ve already outlined, with high quality video content being the main target.  But another way to distribute content is by using Slideshare.  People respond to visual mediums.  SlideShare is not just a repository for your slide presentations. It’s a social channel where you can establish your brand as a thought leader and authority around topics and keywords.

5 – Infographics

For B2B marketers, infographics should be a part of your content creation arsenal.  In 2019 there was a 10.5% increase in visual content marketing over 2018.

Creating Infographics can be a lot of work, and it’s important to get the stats and visuals right.  You can outsource and work with online freelancers, or use pre-made templates from websites like venngage.com.  Either way, If you’ve got information that you want to to get out there, consider if it could be better interpreted as visual content instead of written word.

Remember, regardless of which way you go, consistency is key.  Make a content creation calendar and stick to it!  How does it feel when your favorite tv show gets delayed or postponed?  Exactly, you’ve got an audience now and you need to feed the beast.  Each brand is going to have different needs and a different audience, overtime, you will learn what speaks to them.  The most responsive content is educational.  Give them advice, teach them something they didn’t know before, inspire them to act without making them feel coerced.
